playing nice: gym time

One of my big goals for this year is to help my family move to more of a whole foods way of eating. We’re still working on that, but we’re making good progress.

Hand in hand with that goal is the desire to get all of us moving more.

We’re doing that in a big way now. On Valentine’s Day, we joined a local fitness and racquetball club. It’s about fifteen minutes away, but within a few minutes of the school our youngest attends so it’s pretty convenient.

So far, we’ve used the racquetball courts (a lot!), the weight rooms, basketball courts, cardio center, sauna, heated pool and the tennis courts.  We’re a bit obsessed with racquetball, even if we’re not very good at it. We probably laugh more than we actually hit the ball, but I think the time we spend chasing it down makes up for our lack of actual skills.

We’re still trying to balance solid workouts with playing with the kids, but it’s coming. With my schedule, it’s best for me to go after dropping the boy off, but more convenient for The Pastor to go in the afternoon. Some days, he goes a bit before school is out and works out on his own, then takes the boy back with him. Most Saturday’s, we head over for a solid hour (minus the teenager who believes 9 am to be an ungodly hour).

Sometimes, I think we get so caught up in the science of how and when and ideas of best and most effective…and forget that exercise can just be as simple as moving more.

And it’s okay if it’s fun.
